EJF is a UK-based non-governmental organisation working to protect natural environments, wildlife and defend basic human rights. The team works across offices in 12 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.
In Taiwan, EJF is working to combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) and associated issues such as human trafficking on the distant water fleet. We conduct detailed investigations into illegal, unsustainable and unethical practices and actively promote improvements to policies, corporate governance and the management of fisheries. These in particular focus on the need to increase transparency and traceability in the management of seafood and supply chains.
EJF’s global team also work on a range of other campaigns where environmental insecurity impact human rights. These include climate, forests, cotton and activist training. More information can be found at www.ejfoundation.org
We are looking for a new team member who is passionate about protecting the marine environment and the livelihoods dependent upon it. We are seeking an experienced, determined and motivated campaigner who has understanding of politics, fisheries governance or experience in the similar fields. They will be expected work both independently and with colleagues to conduct research, develop and implement strategies and represent EJF to outside organisations. The also requires regular work trip within Taiwan and beyond.
Under directions of the EJF East Asia Manager, responsibilities will include but not limited to: - Research, investigate and analyse fisheries and human rights issues in Taiwan and other distant water fishing fleets. - Liaise with internal and external partners, stakeholders and decision-makers to develop and implement advocacy plans for EJF’s work in Taiwan. - Maintain and build EJF’s relationships with relevant figures in the Taiwanese government, including parliamentarians and officials.  - Raise the awareness and understanding in the Taiwanese media, wider public and other key stakeholders about the problems of IUU fishing and human trafficking in the seafood industry and the need for greater transparency to solve these problems. - Build relationships with Taiwanese seafood industry groups in order to present EJF’s findings and recommendations for improvement. - Develop EJF materials in Mandarin as required
Requirements - Have professional experience in policy, oceans, human rights, government and/or other relevant fields. - Demonstrably good communications and interpersonal skills, s/he will be a natural diplomat, comfortable addressing a wide range of audiences, specifically including government officials, decision makers in government and industry, the media and colleagues across civil society. - Experience working on other environmental issues, particularly climate change, would also be desirable - Demonstrable professional experience in research, public affairs or communications. - Attention to detail and ability to manage and prioritise several tasks at the same time - Professional level English and Mandarin in writing, speaking, listening and reading is critically essential. Ability to speak Japanese, Korea, Bahasa or Tagalog also desirable.
